Muskets & Magic Melee Combat
Three inputs, a stamina bar, and why empty M1 spam loses to a Grenadier.
Muskets still decide most Ignia and Zemliya rounds, but melee decides the ugly seconds between volleys. Nanoplex Studio’s official showcase is blunt: the system is three main inputs, simple to start, easy to throw. You will lose fights with a full health bar if your stamina is empty. You will lose them faster if you keep clicking.
This page is for bayonets, sabres, axes, Sitari blades, and the Grenadier who is walking through your rank. Pair it with Controls so attack, extra melee, and block are actually on keys you can hit. Pair it with Getting Started if you still spawn as Line Infantry and freeze when a Knight closes.
The three-input loop
Treat melee as a small fighting game, not a clicker.
- Primary attack — the swing people call M1. Bayonets thrust. Swords cut. Axes chop with a heavier recovery.
- Second and third inputs — follow-ups, directional swings, or the extra melee the weapon allows. The showcase splits good sword play from bad sword play in seconds: the good clip waits, the bad clip mashes.
- Block — hold to catch a hit. Some weapons can perfect block. That window is a timing skill, not a panic mash after you already swung.
If you only bind one melee key, you will only ever M1. That is enough to finish a panicked Rifleman. It is not enough against a Sitari Heavy or a Grenadier who still has stamina.
Stamina is the real health bar
Health tells you whether you can take a musket ball. Stamina tells you whether you can still fight after you have taken one. Sprint, swing, and block all pull from the same pool on gunpowder classes. Empty it and you are a mannequin. The worst habit in playtests is spamming M1 on an empty bar. You stay locked in whiffed swings while the opponent walks in and hits you for free.
Grenadiers get more HP and more stamina, slower reload, worse accuracy, and a slightly taller hitbox. They exist to win this layer. If you are Line Infantry, do not take a long duel with a Grenadier in the open. Shoot them as they close, or meet them with a bayonet after they have already swung at someone else. If you are the Grenadier, your job is to arrive with stamina left. A Grenadier who sprinted the whole field has already spent the advantage.
Healers and Surgeons can bandage you and pulse an AOE heal. That does not refill a brain that keeps clicking. Block, wait, then swing. If a Healer is behind you, fight inside the glow instead of chasing a kill into a second Grenadier.
Bayonet versus sword versus axe
Bayonet (Line Infantry, Grenadier muskets) wants a thrust in a rank or a short lunge off a volley. It reaches farther than a shortsword and worse than a spear. Use it when the enemy has entered the smoke, not as your plan from spawn. Reloading with a bayonet fight already started is how you die holding a ramrod.
Sword / sabre (Officer, Healer, Flag Bearer, many Sitari kits) is the standard duel weapon. The showcase’s sword versus sword clips are the tutorial: space, block, punish. Officers should not hunt 1v1s for fun; their pistol and range aura are the real kit. If you must draw steel, you have already failed the gunfight or you are Sitari and this is the gunfight.
Shortsword (Rifleman) is an emergency tool. Riflemen win by shooting flanks. If you are in a long sword fight as Rifleman, you walked too far into a Sitari blob.
Axe (Sapper, Sitari Engineer, DoD Trapper) hits like a building tool that also murders people. The showcase’s sword versus axe clip is the warning: respect the axe’s damage and respect its recovery. Sappers should still prefer building over duel hunting. An axe that deleted a firing platform did more than an axe that won one 1v1. See Sapper Building.
Greatswords, shields, spears, maces show up on Sitari and some DoD kits. Sklirite armour on Sitari Heavies shrugs off a lot of blades and shot until it does not. You do not out-trade a Heavy by clicking faster. You out-trade them with stamina discipline, a perfect block if your weapon has it, or a musket ball before they arrive.
Sitari is a melee faction
Theocracy of Sitari does not bring line muskets. Linemen charge with short swords and shields. Archers are the “riflemen.” Heavies wear the thick Sklirite and swing the big blade. Knights lead like Officers with a spearhead instead of a pistol. If you queue Sitari, this page is your gun guide.
Against Sitari, Ignia and Zemliya should kill the charge before it lands. Volley early. Do not wait to “see the whites of their eyes” if those eyes are already in bayonet range. Mage fire and earth shots from behind the line matter more here than in a pure musket mirror. A Fire Mage who 1v1s a Heavy is feeding; a Fire Mage who hits the Heavy at twenty studs is doing the job. How to Play Mage covers that spacing.
Descendants of Death mix scavenged guns with Brutes, Werewolves, and other ugly close kits. Treat a DoD push like Sitari plus surprise firearms. Do not assume the thing sprinting at you is unarmed.
Map-specific melee
Ticket Deathmatch (Little Green, Prok’s Glade) lets you respawn. Take a melee only when it saves tickets: a Grenadier crashing a reload clump, a Sapper deleting a platform, a Flag Bearer about to die in the open. Feeding five bayonet charges is how 100 tickets become 0. Map layouts are on Battle Maps.
Deathmatch (Final Stand of the Two Battalions, Battle of the Remnants) is one life. Melee is for finishing a wounded shooter or defending a last bush, not for “testing the new swing.” If you are the last Grenadier, you are the remaining HP of the team. Walk, do not sprint-empty.
Attack Defense (Strike at Wickland Manor) is doorways, stairs, and capture points. Sitari attackers want melee in chokes. Ignia defenders want muskets on platforms a Sapper already built. If you are defending, do not jump down for a sabre highlight. If you are attacking, do not M1 a braced Grenadier at the top of the stairs with an empty bar.
A short drill that actually works
Play two rounds where you refuse to swing unless you still have stamina. Count the times you would have mashed. Those would-have-been deaths are the entire skill. Then play one Sitari round as Lineman or Heavy so your brain learns what a committed melee faction feels like from the inside. Then go back to Line Infantry and you will stop treating bayonets as a joke.
Grenadiers excel because the numbers say so: more HP, more stamina, a musket that still shoots. They do not excel because they are allowed to ignore the three-input loop. A Grenadier who perfect-blocks a sabre and answers with a bayonet is terrifying. A Grenadier who sprints, empties the bar, and click-spams is a tall loot crate.
Melee in this game is a stamina conversation that happens to involve blades. Learn the three inputs, keep enough bar to block, and stop treating empty M1 as a personality. Do that and Sitari stops feeling like a bug, Grenadiers stop feeling unkillable, and your musket line survives the ten seconds after the first volley — which is the only melee that actually wins rounds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for Muskets & Magic players.
How many melee inputs are there?
Three main inputs, plus blocking. Some weapons can perfect block. Mash only the primary swing and you will lose to anyone who still has stamina.
Why do I die when I keep clicking?
Empty stamina. When the bar is gone, M1 spam leaves you defenseless. Back up, block, or run. Do not click at the air.
Who is best in melee?
Grenadiers on Ignia and Zemliya, and Sitari as a whole. Sitari is a melee and bow faction with Sklirite armour. Mages should not 1v1 any of them.
Should Riflemen take sword fights?
Only as a panic tool. Riflemen carry a shortsword for emergencies. If you are in a long duel, you already walked into the wrong range.
Does blocking work on every weapon?
You can block on the melee kit. Perfect block is only on some weapons. Confirm the feel in a round rather than assuming every sabre has the same window.
Where do I learn the rest of the combat loop?
Remap first on Controls, then read How to Play Mage so you stop charging casters, and Sapper Building so axes go into cover as well as people.
